In this session, co-presented by Will Hannum and Jonathan Cassie of Sewickley Academy, attendees will learn about the experience of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and queer students in independent schools. Participants will also gain an understanding of the legal framework that governs the rights of students and responsibilities of schools to ensure an educational experience free from discrimination. The session will end with considerations of how the ongoing question in American society of same-sex marriage rights may impact family and school partnerships and best practices in this area in independent schools and in higher education.
